(True story: Once I rode in a car ferry to an island with a Japanese high school teacher co-worker. The cars were on the floor of the ferry, and above and around them was a walkway with a rail for foot passengers. Muneta-sensei (name changed to protect the guilty) says, "OK, Khergit-sensei, I'm going to show you a trick. We're going to stay in the car. After the ferry gets going, groups of girls will come up to the rail to look around at the car area. We're going to lean our seats back, pretend we're sleeping, and look up. You'll get to see a show! Here, wear my shades, I don't need them. I'm a pro at this." It seemed pretty weird and creepy alright, but what are you going to do? Call the guy a perv and refuse? Yeah, probably should have done that.
So we sit there with our seats reclined, playing opossum for a half-hour ride, and what kind of undercarriages do we see? Maybe a deck crew guy going past. An old lady (fortunately, wearing loose pants) pushing around a drinks for sale cart. Two old local island fishermen guys, one of them with an artificial leg. Ferry's about to dock up, then there's the awkward moment of two failed pretend-sleeper/peeper co-workers raising their car seats back to the upright position....  Life is strange. People are strange. When you're a stranger.  ) |
